From tonic wine to natural hormones…
The BESINS HEALTHCARE history started in 1885 with the foundation of one of the oldest pharmaceutical laboratories. At that time, Abel Besins brought on the market a tonic wine, vin de Bugeaud, which met an international success.
For more than 100 years, four generations of Besins family members invested in research to conceive innovative products such as Veinosine (1921), Germose (1930), Solubéol (1940), Opopédol (1960), etc.
In 1965, Laboratoires Besins bought Laboratoires Iscovesco. This acquisition gave birth to Laboratoires Besins-Iscovesco which innovated with the launch in 1967 of a first anti-inflammatory and analgesic gel; Percutalgine
In 1971 the first hormone therapy by transdermal route – Progestogel – a progesterone gel for benign breast diseases was launched.
Four years later an estradiol gel – Oestrogel – using the same Transdermal Delivery Technology was launched for Hormone Replacement Therapy.
During the last two decades of the 20th century, Laboratoires Besins established its international reputation and became a renowned actor with Utrogestan (first micronized natural progesterone), Andractim (first dihydrotestosterone gel) and Androgel (first testosterone gel) which encountered a worldwide success.
In 2007, the group changed name and became BESINS HEALTHCARE.
