Gynaecology

imgSignificant advances in gynaecology have been realized over the past decades, in particular in the area of reproductive hormones.

Female hormones control the development of female characteristics and regulate the menstrual cycle and pregnancy.

They are involved in the growth, maintenance and repair of the reproductive tissues. The female hormones also influence other body tissues such as brain, cardiovascular tissues and skeletal tissues.

There are two types of female hormones : estrogens and progesterone.

The term ‘Estrogen’ is short-hand for a group of different, but related, hormones : Estrone, Estradiol and Estriol.

Estrogens are essential for normal female sexual development and for the healthy functioning of the reproductive system.

Together with progesterone, estrogens are essential in menstrual cycle regulation and in preparing the uterus for pregnancy.

Progesterone is ‘the hormone of pregnancy’ due to its preponderant role in the development of the foetus, body adaptation and milk production. Progesterone is also crucial during the second part of the menstrual cycle.

Natural micronised progesterone is of vegetal origin and is identical to the progesterone naturally produced by the ovaries.

The woman has different stages in her life. After the reproductive years, menopause occurs between the age of 45 and 55 and a new phase of life begins. Diminished production of reproductive hormones by the ovaries will progressively provoke the disappearance of the monthly menstrual cycles. The hormonal fluctuations and the subsequent onset of menopause can be accompanied by vasomotor symptoms such as hot flushes, night sweats, sleep disturbances, irritability, vaginal dryness, urinary tract infections, sexual dysfunction,…

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is the first prescribed treatment for women with menopausal symptoms. This traditional therapy uses estradiol and progesterone to compensate for hormone deficiencies. For women without a uterus (‘hysterectomized women’), estrogen alone is mandatory.

In most women, the symptoms associated with menopause are significantly improved with Hormonal Replacement Therapy (HRT).

Alternative solutions exist for women for whom HRT is contra-indicated. Food supplements, dietary advices, exercise and life style are helpful in this case.
